Hi, my name is Brandon and I am the Trumpet Guy. I am 21 years old and have been playing the trumpet for over 12 years. I started playing in 4th grade, when band started. I’m not really sure why, but before I started I had always wanted to play the trumpet. I think it was because trumpets always play the melody, and that was the only thing that interested me. I guess it fit my ego a little bit too ;). I have always loved playing, but never really took it seriously until high school, when I started playing in the jazz band. Turns out this was my true love when playing the trumpet and was far more fun than playing in concert band. Good thing too because jazz band started at 6:30 am! This meant that I had to wake up at 5:30 am every day for 4 years to get to jazz band on time. I do not miss those days.
Anyways, I always thought of music as a fun thing and I always loved getting better, but I think the thought of how hard it appears to make money playing music really scared me away from going to college for music performance. Instead, I went to school based on my love of science and am currently about to graduate with my bachelors in biological science with an emphasis in pre-health and biomedical science. Still trying to figure out exactly what to do with that. My plan going into college was that even though I wasn’t going to major in music, I would still play in the jazz band at my University, which is really good. However, I found out about one week in that a pre-health major does not allow much free time, and there was no way that I was going to have time to be in the jazz band, which met three times a week in the morning. Luckily for me, I had a fallback that kept me playing. My YouTube channel only had about 2,000 subscribers at the time, which looking back doesn’t seem like much, but at the time it felt like a ton. Recording a video every week for my YouTube channel kept me playing, and I am super grateful for it because I’m not sure I would have kept playing without it.
I started my YouTube channel when I was in high school just as a fun thing to do when I was bored, and it has grown into something that I never expected. Today we have over 100,000 members of the trumpet fam and counting. As the channel has grown, so have my goals for what I want out of the channel and what I want from the community. My aim with the Trumpet Guy channel is to inspire new trumpet players, no matter what age, to pick up their trumpet and improve. It is so easy to lose motivation when learning an instrument, especially when you are playing music that doesn’t interest you. With my channel, I hope to show beginners, and non beginners that there is no limit to the types of music that can be played on the trumpet, and anyone can do it. I also want to help you all reach your goals and be able to play all of this exciting music, which is why I love to incorporated lessons into my channel as well. I hope that all the tools I have provided, including my videos, sheet music, and trumpet course can help get you to where you want to be in your trumpet playing.
Just for CRINGE sake, here a picture from one of my very first videos, and one from my newest. At least I’ve gotten better at growing facial hair.
